Coeur d'Alene Tribe donates to schools

The Coeur d'Alene Tribe has donated $1.2 million to 52 educational programs in Idaho.

The money is going to support educational efforts ranging from reading, music, arts, science, college scholarship programs and vocational preparation.

The chairman of the Coeur d'Alene Tribe, Chief Allen, says the money will allow students to focus on learning.

Most of the money was distributed in Kootenai and Benewah counties in northern Idaho, but some went as far away as Sugar City in eastern Idaho, and Wilder and Meridian in southwest Idaho.

The tribe returns 5 percent of its net gambling revenues to the financial support of education as part of its gambling compact with Idaho.

North Idaho native ready to hit the slopes for Team USA

Sandpoint, Idaho native Nate Holland is preparing for the race of his life on Monday in the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Holland grew up in Sandpoint and still owns a summer business there. He's been to the Olympics twice now, finishing fourth in Vancouver in 2010.

"I made it to finals, but one off of the podium," Holland said. "That's a tough place to be, I'm hungry for this."

On Monday Holland will be on the big stage again as he competes in Snowboard Cross, his dreams on the edge of coming true.

"He wants to do well here," says his mom Rebecca. "He's really dedicated himself to this year, his determination and fighting through a broken collar bone.

She will be watching closely from Sandpoing while his dad Don will be cheering him on in person.

"I tell you, I fell like a jack in the box right now. I'm keeping a lid on the energy so I can move around here and sleep at night," he said.

While Nate has never won an Olympic medal, he's no stranger to awards. He's won eight X-Game golds, and is a 17-time world cup medalist.
